Since Graduating I continued to work at my Union for 2 years then resigned and took up a Senior Executive Position in a newly government established Corporation for Transport in Sydney, New South Wales.
After joining HTUP, he was a union executive for two years. After the term of union executive, I worked in the company’s education department, and now works in HR.
After attending the HTUP in 2002, I continued to work on behalf of California teachers as a bargaining specialist with the CTA. I helped bargain contracts in CTA locals all over northern California. I retired in 2006, but continued part-time work under an emeritus contract with CTA until 2010. Fully retired since then.
Shortly after attending HTUP I graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a BA in Labor Studies and entered into and completed a Masters in Healthcare Management. I was elected as the Massachusetts Nurses Association in 2009 and served 5 terms until my retirement in 2020.
Become President of Rail Tram and Bus Union. Decided to move on and educate delegates. Since then have held several positions in different unions but still train delegates.
I went on to serve as the first female Exec Dir of the WA Federation of State Employees, leading in crisis through the coronavirus pandemic and achieving historic gains for public workers in WA.
A couple of the most important things that HTUP gave me were: Context and understanding of what else is happening in the wider world of labor. This came from both the instructors and my fellow students. Great lifelong friendships with others who share the same values.
Sabrina Yow-chyi Liu has been a campaigner and researcher in the United Steelworkers (USW) Strategic Campaigns Department since 2014. She works with members to build power during contract negotiations and in labor disputes.
HTUP allowed me to meet others who are passionate about labor, from various crafts, and from different geographic locations. As a result of this experience, I realized I wanted to expand my opportunities to represent workers. As such, HTUP was the impetus for me to pursue a J.D.
