Executive Director
AFSCME
2019
I went on to serve as the first female Exec Dir of the WA Federation of State Employees, leading in crisis through the coronavirus pandemic and achieving historic gains for public workers in WA. Tackled critical work of culture change to model professionalism, collective approach to problem-solving, and establishing an operational culture of safety, healing, and collaboration to build and sustain a truly member-driven organization at the worksite level. Served gubernatorial appointments to the WA Public Pension Policy Committee and the WA Public Employee Benefits Board. Served as a Vice President on the WA State Labor Council demonstrating the important work of justice for the whole worker.
What impact has the HTUP had on your life/career? The importance of being a courageous, principled, and inclusive leader protecting and growing collective power of, by, and through workers. And most importantly, to model ethical leadership grounded and centered in labor values while defending labor from anti-democratic and anti-worker threats both internal and external.
Do you have an interesting/funny story of when you attended the program? 2019 – pitchforks!
