Visa Information

Entering the United States for citizens from other countries

Most participants who are not U.S. citizens or residents will need a non-immigrant visa to attend our programs in the United States. You should request the 90-day B-1/B-2 Visa rather than the F-1 Student Visa to attend the HTUP, as program participants are not considered full-time enrolled students at Harvard University, and the program is shorter than than 90 days. If you are admitted to a program, the admission letter you receive should be sufficient to obtain a visa for entry into the United States.

Canadian citizens and citizens from Visa Waiver Program countries (including Australia and New Zealand) may come to the United States without a visa if they meet certain requirements. For more information about visa and passport requirements, visit the U.S. Department of State website.

As part of the Visa Waiver Program, you can come to the US for 90 days without a special visa. You will need to get approval before you depart from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

The list of requirements to participate in the Visa Waiver Program can be found at: https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program-requirements

These include having the correct type of passport, passport picture, and that your passport expires 6 months after you are scheduled to return to your country.

You must also complete an online application on Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA): https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/

This application must be completed and approved before you leave your country.
